Steps to Self Discovery

Recently, I’ve read a lot of articles and blogs about self discovery in order to familiarize myself with the process. I find them really interesting, it’s refreshing to read things that offers some sort of guidance. I came across a blog called “The 7 Steps of Self Discovery” and even though I wouldn’t follow a step by step self discovery plan, I thought that it would still have some interesting tips. The article, written by Evelyn Lim on evenlynlyn.com, discussed a lot of important things to consider when on a journey of self discovery. For example, It talked about the most common blocks that keep people from investing time into themselves, such as dreading the realization of their bad qualities or the lack of self love.

The block that I related to the most was simply not having enough time to do it. Self discovery takes a lot of dedication and time, it’s a long process that can’t be done overnight. I often lose track of my self discovery when I’m busy with work or school. I just started a new job which was a huge change for me. During this adjustment, I lost focus of my self discovery because it felt like I was constantly busy. I was working everyday and going to school full time, eventually I became so burnt out and was exhausted all the time. This made me realize that it’s crucial to set aside time for yourself. I learned that overworking yourself can be detrimental to your mental health, we must always allow for enough “me time.”

Once you finally decide to plunge into the journey of self discovery, Evenlyn Lim recommends steps such as facing your demons in order to discover what needs to be worked on. I already evaluated myself in terms of things that I need to change and I’ve been working on it. Once you identify these weaknesses, you’re already improving yourself because you’ve come to terms with what needs changing.

Another step that is recommended is to celebrate yourself and your successes, something I almost never do. For example, my new job is extremely outside of my comfort zone and it was really hard to build enough confidence in order to start. I am extremely thankful that I stepped outside of my comfort zone because I am making so much more money than I was before. I never celebrated myself getting a new job because I instantly started training, so I never had much time to process it. Fortunately for me, I don’t think it’s too late to treat myself!

Another step that really resonated with me was “Asking yourself: What is Life’s Purpose?” It’s extremely important to establish goals for the future in order to work towards something and achieve it. Your life has to have a purpose and a direction, or else it may seem like you’re going nowhere. Establishing goals can help you work towards a life where you’re passionate about living. A quote by Robert Bryne that was used in the article really resonated with me, it states; “The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” This quote made me reevaluate what I truly want in life and where I want to end up.

After reading the article, I am inspired to start journaling everyday. I will write down things that I am grateful for, and I will start setting daily goals that will help me strive to achieve. I think that this would help me become more organized and it would make me feel more accomplished. These goals can be small or large, depending on how I’m feeling that day. They could range from doing homework for 2 hours to making sure that I spend time with my mom. Focusing on daily goals and writing how I feel in a journal would definitely help me keep my life in order. In my next post, I’ll discuss what I’ve been writing in my journal and whether or not I find it useful.
